Description
The FCREADHCU3 USB 3.0 Card Reader enables easy read/write access to a variety of popular flash memory card formats/types (CompactFlash, Secure Digital, Memory Stick) in a single unit, over a high speed USB 3.0 connection.Using a connection over USB 3.0, which is up to 10 times faster than the USB 2.0 standard, makes transferring large data files much quicker; it (USB 3.0) is still backward compatible with USB 2.0 however, ensuring compatibility with older systems. This compact and lightweight external card reader offers a portable, convenient solution for accessing many different types of Flash Memory/Media cards and is easy to use, with no driver or software installation required.Backed by a StarTech 2-year warranty and free lifetime technical support.

It needs to be common knowledge that USB3.0 data connections are ALWAYS interfered with by the electromagnetics of a Wifi connection. (Unless your setup uses ONLY 5Ghz-band Wifi by choice.) You WILL get random disconnects™ when you try to use a USB3.0 port as intended. I'm not exaggerating and it's part of the reason why we all wanted to move onto USB3.1 and Type-C as quickly as possible. Some people have still been lucky enough live a normal life of never noticing the USB3.0 flaw™ even while using a bunch of USB3.0 equipment, just getting lucky with all the equipment they ever use: lucky motherboard inside the computer, lucky choice of peripherals, lucky choice of cables, or maybe they just never tried to go cheap on anything and was always buying from the Apple store...Startech(dot)com makes an absolutely really good USB-SATA adapter. I use it for working on SSDs. I have 2 of those cables and I've used them for years in order to format, manage, and transfer data across several SSDs with never a single failure. So now, that's a cable with the proper design-safeties or whatever that prevent E.M.I. issues, it doesn't get any disconnects™.This card reader doesn't have ...that. So if you want to try USB3.0 data transfers on this... voila, Random Disconnects™. And what's hilarious is, people used to say "EMI might affect a USB3.0 device, if the cable is too long, maybe longer that 3 feet". Yeah, no, there's not even any cable here on this product...Apart from the USB3.0 weirdness™, this is a proper card reader that accomplishes what it should, when plugged into a USB2 port! (Alternatively, you use it with a male-and-female-ended extension cable that was only made for USB2, that'll force the USB3 port to act as USB2.)Very convenient that it can read MicroSDHC cards in a separate slot from normal SDHC/XC cards, MUCH appreciated feature! In terms of reading & writing data (in USB2), it's been working perfectly with no failures or corruptions, ever.Compared to other USB card readers, this one is very handy. I like the orientation of how cards go in, what direction they're facing when all plugged in. This also just feels good in the hand, whenever I've needed to use it. It feels good to put away inside a drawer, because of being rectangular, like it has a "normal" way of existing in this world. (unlike some other card readers that are round-shaped that whenever you put those away they'll be wobbling around inside your drawer just making that wobbling noise for all of eternity...)Despite any USB3.0 flaws™ I still recommend this as a solid choice of card reader, for its good price plus good physical design plus portability. As deuI love StarTech! They make anything and everything that should exist elsewhere, but does not! I have several of their adapters and cables and they work wonders!Wasn't getting the speed I was hoping for out of my UHS-II SD cards so I contacted customer service. They told me to try the aux power supply. I thought that had. fixed it but it turns out I just happened to plug my card into slot 2 instead of slot 1 for the first time. If you'll be transferring 2 cards at once, make sure you put the faster card in slot 2.oki shoot concerts and live performace.. so i come back with an absolutely ridiculous amount of photos. This card reader is ridiculously fast. i can pull all the images off a sony 128gb card in about 6 min. with a macbook pro. (for that kinda speed you need to be using fast UHS-II cards)its been around the world with me twice. its held up just fine.Work well for me, fast on USB3, though I note that if you're using USB3 for anything, your range for wireless keyboards and mice goes way way down...these seem to more reliably get all the bits right when burning SD cards for raspberry pi and other things like that, where every bit matters. I put this on a hub I got at amazon with switches to turn it off when not in use, so my keyboards and mice work from across the room instead of within 2 feet - that's not just this item, it's most USB3 devices that don't take extreme care in RF shielding (and this, by definition has big holes...).I found an old memory stick that wouldn't work in my laptop. I used this and it was so easy to use and got all my pictures. I would recomend for the price you can't go wrong either. Great product.Beginning with my assurance that I don't have any professional association with the companies that either make or sell this product, here are my personal opinions and conclusions regarding this particular Startech card reader:PROS:+ In a word, versatility! This card reader (model designation FCREADHCU3) can accept - via its four dedicated ports, of varying sizes - any of the following storage media:CF (Compact Flash I/II Card)M2 (Memory Stick Micro)Micro-SDHC (Micro Secure Digital High Capacity)Mini-SD, Micro-SD (Mini/Micro Secure Digital)MS Duo, MS Pro Duo, MS Pro-HG DuoMS MG (Memory Stick w/ MagicGate)MS/MS Pro (Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro)MSXC (Memory Stick eXtended Capacity)RS-MMC (Reduced Size Multimedia Card)SD/MMC (Secure Digital/Multimedia Card)SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity)SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity)+ The integrated Genesys Logic GL3220 chipset facilitates rapid USB 3.0 transfer rates (the reader is also backwards compatible with the USB 2.0 standard - but that will be a lot slower, of course!)+ The supplied USB connecting lead is a useful 80 cm in length and attaches very securely to the unit+ According to the information provided on the official website (startech.com), this card reader will apparently work with ALL Operating Systems+ Measuring only 85 mm (width) x 55 mm (depth) x 20 mm (height), and weighing only 54 g (excluding the USB lead), this card reader is eminently portable+ The unit is sold with a standard 2 year warranty+ All things considered, a very competitive priceCONS:- Although the quality of construction appears superior to other card readers in this price range, it does still feel a touch insubstantial and 'plastic-y' (it's made in China, by the way)- As with all card readers of this type, the pins located within the ports can potentially be damaged (i.e., bent) if the media is inserted at a careless angle or pushed home using excessive force- There is no protective case or covers provided, so the open media ports are vulnerable to the ingress of dust and lintIn conclusion:In this sector of the market, Startech is surely the company to beat when it comes to offering quality multi-media card readers at an affordable price. The FCREADHCU3 is another clear winner and is therefore a highly recommended buy.Small, lightweight and comes with attached USB C cable. The micro USB socket on the side only for powering only from my check, so if the attached cable is damaged you are stuffed.Easy to connect, although does sometimes feel a little flimsy, especially in the card slots area.I guess its as good a dual slot UHS-II based reader for the money you will find.I have just installed windows 10 and thought I could have a problem with it, but no it installed and works fine The first card I used with it was a 32GB Sandisk full of RAW files from my camera and it worked a treat. So why 4 stars ? well it is just a little awkward for inserting the card into the reader when it is in place in the usb port. But with care, not a big problem. For me, great little product at the price and I have used it on numerous occasions now without a hitchGreat read speeds. Nice and small. Fairly compact. No random disconnects. The little wire folds away easily. The design is pretty 'basic' - but it does the job.Exactly as in the product description. High quality at a fairly reasonable price. I would recommend. Please read the product descriptions carefully. It has specific equipment. USB - Type C, SD CARD reader. Adapter needed to read the micro SD card.
